Concrete Chimney Strengthening Projects:
Lindsey Oil Refinery - Concrete Strenghthening of the 97.5m South Block Chimney BP Coryton - Concrete Strenghtening
LINDSEY OIL REFINERY
The Brief At Total’s request Delta were invited onsite to install a 9m deep x 125mm thick steel reinforced concrete jacket cast in situ below the existing jacket at the chimney termination of the South Block Chimney. Delta were requested to supply all plant, equipment and materials to carry out the installation. The Delta Difference The existing caged ladder provided access up to the gas sampling platform at the 60m level. From this platform, a steeplejack access ladder was temporarily installed to 4m below the chimney termination. A special heavy duty independent cathead scaffold constructed from tube and fittings, made to Delta’s design, was erected to support the weight of a Thompson Man Riding Winch. Utilising the winch system, six additional lifts of scaffolding between the 72m and 84m levels, set off 500mm from the chimney windshield, were mounted. This provided sufficient space for the work to be carried out and to allow the shutters to be moved and re-installed without obstructions. At the base of the scaffold a full circumferential debris fan scaffold was installed to provide essential protection to the plant and equipment below. In addition, fully enclosed debris netting was added around the scaffolds to prevent incidents in such a congested live process plant and to allow the safe passage of the wheel barrows between each platform.
The concrete was poured in 1.2m lifts utilising a jump shutter system. The timber shutters were constructed to Delta’s design and that enabled the concrete to be formed to the exact requirements of the chimney.
