Liverpool & Aberdeen Airports - Re-installation of Visual Control Module Glazing
LIVERPOOL & ABERDEEN AIRPORTS
The Brief
During the construction of a new Control Tower at Liverpool Airport in 2001, two of the huge angled glass windows sustained minor damage and required replacement. Delta were called onsite to the tower, which has panoramic views over the entire airport and surrounding areas, to remove and replace the damaged windows.
Five years on, Delta were contacted by TEX ATC to carry out the same re-installation of glazing to the Control Tower at another airport under their control; Aberdeen.
The Delta Difference
After assessing the situation, Delta’s solution was to rig the Control Tower with abseiling equipment from the roof to enable personnel to be lowered in front of the windows. This was the most practical solution as they had to take into consideration the roof. Although structurally sound, it has a membrane that is prone to damage. It was also necessary to take into account the hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of sensitive telecommunications equipment that were housed in the Control Tower.
A crane was used to lift up special suction pads to attach to the redundant windows. With the assistance of site personnel inside the control tower, each window was gently prised away from the tower and lowered safely to the ground. The replacement followed the same procedure in reverse.
Due to the nature of the material, stringent safety precautions were taken to ensure all personnel were never at risk.
Delta offer flexible solutions for the most awkward to access locations and their past experience of this exact work made them prime candidates to carry out the same works in Aberdeen five years on. They have a track record when it comes to providing engineering and contracting expertise for infrastructure projects and industries worldwide as Ian Wright, the appointed Project Engineer at Aberdeen says: “the men fully adopted the Airports Authorities Rules and Regulations, always arrived on site on time, worked extremely hard and always ensured that the site was left clean and tidy before departing. They were both a credit to their trade and your company.”
